Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between speech pathology and voice coaching?

Both aim to improve how your voice feels and functions, but the purpose is different.

Speech pathology (voice therapy) is a clinical service for voice, breathing, or upper airway difficulties that affect comfort, communication, or function. This may include conditions such as vocal fatigue, hoarseness, muscle tension dysphonia, nodules, paresis, inducible laryngeal obstruction, chronic throat tightness, or breathing pattern disorder.

Voice coaching is performance-focused and supports technique, efficiency, stamina, tone, range, and style when there is no injury or medical condition.

If you’re unsure which service is right for you, that’s completely okay. This can be clarified during your enquiry or first session.

How do I know if I need voice therapy or voice coaching?

As a general guide:

  • If you’re experiencing pain, strain, tightness, loss of range, fatigue, or voice changes with speaking or singing, or you’ve been diagnosed with a voice or breathing condition, speech pathology is usually the best starting point.
  • If your voice feels healthy but you want to improve performance or technique, voice coaching may be more suitable.

Some people benefit from both at different stages. For example, a singer may begin with therapy and transition into coaching once their voice feels stable again.

Do I need to see an ENT or laryngologist first?

If you’re experiencing ongoing voice changes, it’s recommended that your vocal folds are examined by an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist, ideally one with a focus on voice (a laryngologist). This allows visualisation of the vocal folds and helps identify inflammation, structural changes, or other contributing factors.

You don’t need to wait for this appointment to begin working with me. ENT wait times can be long, and support, education, and safe strategies can begin in the meantime. Once an ENT report is available, it will be integrated into your therapy plan.

How do I know if I’m just sick or have a voice problem?

Short-term voice changes during a cold or flu usually improve as the illness resolves. If your voice has been hoarse, breathy, strained, or “not quite right” for more than two weeks, it’s important to have it checked by an ENT.

What is your cancellation policy?

Appointments cancelled within 24 hours may incur a fee, as this time is reserved for you. If you need to reschedule, please provide as much notice as possible.

Do you offer mentoring for speech pathologists?

Yes. I offer 60-minute mentoring sessions for speech pathologists interested in voice, at a fee of $180 per session.
